Creating mana enhancing opportunities

Our programme isn’t just about training people – there’s no point if it doesn’t lead to decent work with real career prospects.

The Southern Initiative (TSI) leads one of the two consortia that exist in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. We’re the only consortium in the country led by local government and our main focus is what difference can be made to labour market outcomes and income inequality with training as the vehicle. And we also work with a consortium of Employer’s who are committed to ensuring that learners have access to jobs with dignity.

"My career began when I was 18 years old, I had just moved to Auckland, I was door knocking looking for a job and J&R were the first ones to call me back and give me a job. I started J&R as a labourer on the ground and over a 10 year period I have worked my way up from operating machinery to leading the crews to being in an office space role and I am now an estimator" - Jonas Savage

“I went from being an early childhood teacher to driving trucks. I had my own baby and didn't want to look after other peoples kids then go home and look after my own so I decided to try something different. I am in the skilled labourer pathway and i’ve learned how to do ducting, drain lines, using hand tools, the right PPE gear, my next step is to get experience using big machinery” - Chyanne Henry

Expression of Interest

We can’t make the difference needed on our own; we need great employers with great opportunities. We’re looking to partner with employers who are as passionate as us about providing meaningful, mana enhancing opportunities to our MPTT graduates. We’re also interested in employers in the trades and tech who are engaging Māori and Pasifika employees in innovative ways. If that’s you, please get in touch.
